I hope Rob Neyer doesn't get a vote for the Cy Young Award

In a recent post (mainly about Trevor Cahill) ESPN's Rob Neyer says "With an 18-5 record, CC Sabathia's obviously the No. 1 candidate" (for the Cy Young Award).

BS.  CC is a good pitcher, but his stats for 2010 pale in comparison to King Felix Hernandez.

Innings Pitched: 194 vs. 211
HR Allowed: 17 vs. 14
Opponents Batting Average: .245 vs. .222
WHIP: 1.23 vs. 1.10
ERA: 3.14 vs. 2.38
Complete Games: 2 vs. 5

By every objective measure, Felix has pitched significantly better than CC in 2010.

Morgan, you must not read Rob Neyer very often, because this whole post is way off base. Neyer's not saying that he would vote for Sabathia. He's saying that given the track record of the voters -- they like shiny things like wins, last year's Greinke selection notwithstanding -- CC would be the leading candidate.

I know some bloggers like to find slights everywhere, but you really should consider who the original writer is before posting a piece like this. Neyer has always been at the forefront of the sabermetric movement, and were CC to win the award, he would be one of the first people to rail against the stupidity of the selection.

The main differnece between King Felix and CC being pitching for a World Series contender. CC has the luxury of pitching in the strike zone much more often because he is given leads, whereas Felix needs to achieve perfection every time out in order to keep his bullpen from ruining his work. CC also gets to work less innings because the Yankees can afford to pull CC after 7IP when they have a seemingly insurmountable lead.

Every stat there tells me that a)The Yankees are saving some bullets for the postseason, and b) CC pitches with a lead for more often.

CC will have 20+ wins on a WS contender - Felix Hernandez will need to blow away the competition to win a CY on such a terrible team.

Mr. SKIA,

No, I don't read Rob Neyer that often, and if he is really saying that the other, less informed voters see CC as the leader, then I misunderstood him and I apologize. Hopefully he will convince them to vote for somebody more deserving.

Given that Greinke and Lincecum won last year with relatively few wins, I think the voters are getting smarter.
